The Bench – ” Doc martin of the Hamden Arts Commission approached me about creating a basic bench to use as a memorial to Fatman Scoop. My approached to making things out of reclaimed materials is to let the materials demonstrate their own history, so I tend to minimize any modification to the original.

The legs of the bench were bought from a scrap hauler. The seat is two factory flooring boards from a c. 1875 building in New Haven. The back of the bench is two boards from a c. 1900 beach house in Madison Ct. The Arts Commission created a contest for Hamden students to develop memorial artwork for the bench.

I had already completed the basic bench well before the artist Daven kaphar was selected as the winner. As it turns out, the materials in the bench seat were donated to Urbanminers by Daven’s father. This confluence demonstrates the community behind the music ,the art and the reclaiming of local resources.”
